Dognapping is second incident in 24 hours

dognapping24hoursBuffalo police are investigating a second dognapping incident within 24 hours.

The latest dog theft took place Thursday afternoon from a Bennett Village home, the day after two Boston Terriers were snatched off the street at Norwood Avenue and Summer Street in the Elmwood Village.

Investigators were uncertain Sunday whether the two dognappings were related.

Joyce M. Oriley told police her 8-pound white Maltese dog was taken at about 4 p. m. Thursday. The show dog has a value of $3,000.

Meanwhile, rewards totaling $2,000 have been offered for the return of the two Boston Terriers taken by four masked men at about 10:15 p. m. Wednesday.

The terriers are owned by Jordie Kindervater, assistant coach of the men’s tennis team at the University at Buffalo, and his fiancee, Sarah Slusak. The couple were in Mexico, planning their wedding, when they were told that their pets had been abducted.

“We got home as soon as we could,” Kindervater said.

They explained that the animals had been left with a dogwalker while they were in Mexico. A police spokesman said the dogwalker reported that four men with their faces covered by bandannas got out of a car and surrounded her and the dogs.

The missing terriers are Gilly, a brown and white male weighing 25 pounds, and Gabby, a black and white female weighing 18 pounds. Gilly is 7 years old, and Gabby is 5 years old.

Kindervater and Slusak offered a $1,000 reward for the return of Gilly and Gabby, and now friends and relatives have doubled the reward to $2,000. The couple have handed out leaflets, put up posters and gone on the Internet in search of the dogs.

Their pleas have resulted in numerous online comments and messages of sympathy, but the dogs still are missing.
