Top 5 Small Non-Shedding Dog Breeds

All types of dog breeds require some form of grooming and maintenance, but there are some that require much less because they shed less or practically not at all.  A dog’s coat has two kinds of hair with the outer coat usually consisting of coarser hairs while the inner coat consists of softer, shorter hairs.  Once these hairs have grown to their pre-determined length, they stop growing and are shed by new hairs growing in.  Some dog breeds shed twice per year, other shed throughout the year, and some dogs hardly shed their coats at all.

Shih Tzu
Although the Shih Tzu dog breed has a longer coat they hardly shed at all, making them one of the top choices when it comes to choosing a low maintenance addition to the family, despite the fact that they require a brushing each day.  If you give your Shih Tzu a haircut every couple of months their coat requires very little maintenance.

Maltese
This dog breed is one of the most loved and popular of all dogs that are classified as small, mainly because of their eagerness to play and give attention.  The Maltese typically has a silky white coat without any undercoat which contributes to its lack of shedding.

Boston Terrier
As one of the most popular dog breeds among families, the Boston Terrier has a short fine coat that is shiny in appearance.  They require minimal grooming consisting of just a rub down with a damp towel a few times a week.  Boston Terriers are often referred to as hypoallergenic.

Miniature Poodle
You would think that by looking at a Miniature Poodle that they would shed a great deal, but they actually have a dense coat.  Although they do require brushing every couple of days and baths every few weeks, you can rest assured that you will not find this type of dogs fur all over your furniture!

Miniature Schnauzer
In addition to this breed’s playful and energetic characteristics, they are known for not shedding at all, allowing it to be placed into the hypoallergenic category.  Miniature Schnauzer’s have a thick double coat with a wiry top that requires grooming about every 6 weeks with weekly brushing.
