Hero Lucy puts bite on burglars

Disability pensioner Allan Flanagan gives his dog Lucy a cuddle after she chased burglars from his home.TOOWOOMBA disability pensioner Allan Flanagan had hailed his maltese Lucy a hero after she chased and scared off two burglars who tried to break into his home.

Mr Flanagan, 57, suffers from osteoarthritis and was lying down in the lounge room of his Debra St home at 8.30pm on Monday when two men tried to open the back and front screen doors simultaneously.

“Lucy ran up to the front door and started growling like I’ve never seen before,” he said.

“I went to the front door and saw him run into the bushes then Lucy took off like a bullet to the back door.

“She jumped through the cat door and chased him (the second offender) over the fence.

“He ran and jumped over the gate at the side of the house and she shot back inside and barked at every window he passed while running away.

“She was really going mental.”

Mr Flanagan said he was scared and in a fluster, thought he was unable to ring 000 as he had no phone credit.

He said he was surprised at the actions of his three-year-old dog.

“She is so placid. I’ve never seen her savage before,” Mr Flanagan said.

“I didn’t think she had that in her.

“I was worried when she went outside to chase them that they might hurt her. But she took off like a bullet.

“I had the shakes all night and couldn’t sleep. I was up all night cuddling and patting her – she was my hero.

“If they had got in here who knows what could have happened.”

Mr Flanagan said he had only locked the back security screen door 10 minutes before the attempted break-in.

“I never lock the back screen door because it is a bugger of a thing to lock.

“And about 10 minutes before something just made me lock it.

“Plus I’m stone deaf and got two hearing aids, so I’m glad I had them both in.

“I’ll be keeping my doors locked from now on.”

The incident has been reported to Toowoomba Police.
