Son is Thankful for His Mother’s Dog

Son is thankful for his mother’s dog who woke her up right before her Flushing home began filling with smoke

FLUSHING, Michigan — Early Saturday morning, maybe around 1:30 a.m., Jean Bryant was awakened by her little maltese dog, Benji, to use the bathroom, but as soon as she got back into bed was when a normal night took a different turn, a family member said.

When Bryant, 81, of Flushing laid back in bed she heard a boom and rumbling noise and soon thick, dark smoke started to fill the home, said Bryant’s son, Rick York, 61, of Flushing.

He’s very thankful to Benji who woke his mother, so she was awake and alert to get out of the house safely, York said.

“My true belief is that she would have perished (without Benji waking her up),” York said. “She would have been sound asleep. … But she was awake and able to react.”

Bryant called 911 and the Flushing Fire Department arrived soon to put out the fire with the help of the Swartz Creek, Mt. Morris and Montrose fire departments.

Bryant and Benji were not injured in the fire.
